Many Americans are relieved today after it was announced that Minnesota police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of all three counts for the murder of George Floyd. When Floyd was murdered last year, many athletes protested in one way or another, and the NBA even had games postponed in the days after the incident.

After the verdict was announced today, many of the same athletes who were protesting took to social media to share their thoughts.

George Floyd was killed by Derek Chauvin when he was stopped because police were responding to an alleged forgery going on. Then, the nine-minute cell phone video was captured of Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck while he struggled to breathe.

Shortly after, Jacob Blake was killed by police in Kenosha, and the NBA playoffs were halted for a night while they were in the bubble.

Nationwide protests took place (including around sports) and hopefully this verdict provides people with a little bit of closure. However, there is still a lot of work to do, and I’m sure we’re only seeing the beginning of activism in the world of sports.
