Prior to the Boston Red Sox’ decision to bring back Alex Cora as their manager, former outfielder Sam Fuld was reportedly a very real candidate for the position. Cora had been on a one-year suspension for his role in the team’s sign-stealing scandal. At one point, Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo had reported that it was down to Fuld and Cora for the job. Now, Sam Fuld has reportedly been hired by the Philadelphia Phillies, in an entirely different role.
Echoing what others have said: Red Sox are getting close to naming a manager. Sam Fuld seems to have a legitimate shot. Alex Cora still in play. Stay tuned.

Now, it looks like it’s a good thing that Fuld didn’t land the job because he’ll have the opportunity to become a general manager at just 39-years-old.

Sam Fuld talked about his special opportunity, and added that he doesn’t think he’ll be seeking out any managerial openings anytime soon.
“I’m so excited doing what I do now,” Fuld said via Tom Moore. “I don’t envision going down that (managing) road anytime soonThis has all happened in the course of 24 hours, really.”
Fuld started with the Phillies in 2017 as the major league player information coordinator, bringing fresh ideas and incorporating analytics into the day-to-day operations of the team. Fuld also worked as an outfield instructor with the club, which makes sense, the guy could absolutely flash the leather as a player.

Fuld played in eight MLB seasons, and bounced around from the Cubs, Rays, Athletics and Twins.
What a whirlwind offseason this must have been for Sam Fuld, but it looks like he has found his calling. Good luck to the new general manager of the Philadelphia Phillies.
