Ron Rivera Is Making A Terrible Mistake By Benching Dwayne Haskins

Let me preface all of this by saying that I’m a Ron Rivera guy. I think he’s proven time and time again that he is one of the better pure football coaches that we have in the NFL today. With that being said, he is way off the mark in his decision to bench Dwayne Haskins in favor of Kyle Allen.

I’m not going to tell you Haskins’ overall body of work has been good since being drafted 15th overall in 2019, but he hasn’t really had much of a chance, either. Haskins has had three different head coaches since joining Washington. He has also never really been given a full shot as the starter in training camp. Obviously, it didn’t help that Haskins didn’t have a typical training camp to work with his offense this year, due to COVID.

But, Rivera trotted him out there, and what did he expect? The circumstances have been so bad around Dwayne Haskins that I would’ve been shocked to see stellar play. And yeah, Haskins kind of sucked, but who cares.

He’s still only 23-years-old, and he needs time to work through the struggles and learn the offensive system. Promoting Kyle Allen to the starting job is a win-now move, and we shouldn’t be that surprised. That’s how Ron Rivera is wired. No matter how shitty his team is, he’s going to try to win football games above all else. But that’s not what the Washington Football Team needs right now.

What they need is to find their quarterback of the future. Rivera needs to look at his football team for what they are, and that’s bottom feeders. Even in an awful NFC East, Washington is not going anywhere.

With that being the case, the main objective of this season should be to see what pieces you have moving forward. If Dwayne Haskins isn’t going to be your guy, then so be it. But you should make that decision knowing that you gave the kid every opportunity to prove himself, and they haven’t. Not even close. I’d like to see Haskins go to a better situation where he’s given a real shot to be an NFL quarterback. It’s clear that won’t be in Washington.

Twitter was having a field day with the news of Haskins’ benching.
