Rick Pitino has been the head coach at Iona since 2020. But perhaps he might make his way to another college basketball blue-blood before it’s all said and done.

The 69 year old has said in the past that he’d be more than content retiring as the head coach of a small program. But according to a new report, a major program is making a run at the veteran coach.

Per the Sports Junkies, Maryland has made Rick Pitino the top choice to take over their program next year.

During his first season at Iona, Rick Pitino led the Gaels to the MAAC conference championship, making it all the way to the NCAA Tournament with the small program. And this season, Pitino has Iona at an impressive 24-5 clip heading into March.

Pitino led Lousiville to the national Championship in 2013 — but their title was vacated after being hit with several recruiting violations.

Rick Pitino has proven during his time at Iona that he still has the winning formula in his twilight years, and perhaps it’s time for him to prove it, once again, on the big stage.
