The Ivy League has taken the lead in college sports yet again. Thursday the Ivy League announced their decision to cancel all winter sports due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Now Iona coach Rick Pitino has spoken out on the likelihood that the upcoming College Basketball season survives the pandemic.

Rick Pitino believes that under the current COVID-19 protocols the 2020-2021 college basketball season is nearly impossible to survive.
The NCAA basketball committee going to wish they listened to the ACC proposal to have an open NCAA tournament. Protocol makes this basketball season nearly impossible to survive.

The Ivy League’s willingness to go ahead and cancel winter sports gives credence to Pitino’s sentiment.
“Consistent with its commitment to safeguard the health and wellbeing of student-athletes, the greater campus community, and general public, the Ivy League Council of Presidents has decided that league schools will not conduct intercollegiate athletics competition in winter sports during the 2020-21 season,” the Ivy League said in a statement.
Rick Pitino is clearly not alone in his fear for the 2020-2021 college basketball season. College football is struggling to stay afloat and there are now talks about the possibility of postponing the College Football Playoffs. With the struggles in college football, it is naive to expect that things will be much different for the college basketball season. The coronavirus sure doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon.
The bottom line is that Coach Rick Pitino is right. The current COVID protocols will make it very tough for the NCAA to execute a successful college basketball season. I am as excited as anyone about the idea of college basketball making a comeback, however, the season is in serious jeopardy.
