Going into the 2020 NBA season, the Brooklyn Nets looked primed to be the next great NBA superteam. Last July, the Nets inked Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant to long-term maximum contracts. After Brooklyn’s 2018-19 rise back to the playoffs, then-head coach Kenny Atkinson was far away from the hot seat. After stumbling out of the gate in 2020, the Nets decided to move on from Atkinson and hit the reset button.

According to a report from July, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving are going to be influential in deciding who will become their head coach. Early on, it looks like the Nets want to hire a coach familiar with superstar players. Tyronn Lue previously coached Kyrie Irving to an NBA championship in 2016 along with LeBron James. Lue is currently an assistant coach for the Clippers. Jason Kidd’s last coaching gig was with Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee, where he made the playoffs three out of four seasons before being fired in 2018.
However, the Nets are not the only team looking at Tyronn Lue and Jason Kidd. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN recently reported the New Orleans Pelicans will also consider Kidd and Lue if they decide to fire Alvin Gentry.
The Nets recently clinched the seventh seed for the NBA bubble playoffs without Kyrie Irving, Spencer Dinwiddie or Kevin Durant. The Nets seem poised to come back refreshed to pursue title contention for the 2020-21 NBA season.
