Racism Mars Paris Saint Germain Vs Basaksehir Champions League Clash

A very disgusting scene played out in the UEFA Champions League Group H clash between Paris Saint Germain and Instanbul Basaksehir on Tuesday evening.

The topic was a familiar one: racism. And at the center of it all were Demba Ba, Sebastian Coltescu and Pierre Webo.

It was that Coltescu, the game’s fourth official was heatedly accused of using a racist word on Instanbul’s assistant coach, Webo.

Not sure what exactly Webo did but we saw centre referee Ovidiu Hategan brandish a red after just 16 minutes, probably prodded by Coltescu who felt the assistant coach had said something rather bad from the bench.

Ba intervened vehemently, and you can see from this video that has made the rounds the striker arguing with the officials. Webo was also enraged, demanding to know why the official had used the word ‘negru’, in addressing him. ‘Negru‘ is a Romanian word for black.

The match was abandoned, and I think that was right. As for Coltescu, he should be duly reprimanded. Racism or any form of discrimination has no place in football, and the tinniest trace of it is a danger for this beautiful game.

“Following an alleged incident involving the fourth official, the match was temporarily suspended,” read a confirmation from UEFA that they are investigating the Paris incident.

“Uefa will thoroughly investigate the matter and further communication will be made in due course.”

We will learn in due time what this will mean for Sebastian Coltescu.
