Pro Football Focus uses an in-depth analytics scheme to determine player performance and to project what to expect from certain NFL players in the future. Today, PFF came out with their yearly rankings, and obviously most people are interested to see how they ranked the top quarterbacks around the league.

Let’s see how PFF ranked each team’s QB:

Unsurprisingly, Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and Russell Wilson round out the top four. You can argue the order, but there shouldn’t be much debate that those are the four best at their position right now. After that, some of the rankings get interesting.

5. Deshaun Watson

6. Josh Allen

7. Dak Prescott

8. Lamar Jackson

9. Matt Ryan

10. Baker Mayfield

This list isn’t particularly controversial, but I still disagree with some of the assessments. I’m still not sure that I’m sold on Baker Mayfield being a top-10 QB in the NFL over guys like Matthew Stafford, Derek Carr, Ryan Tannehill and Kyler Murray.

I also wonder about Dak Prescott playing at an elite level, and will be curious to see if Matt Ryan can still produce big numbers at this stage of his career.

The bottom of PFF’s list is pretty interesting, too.

Check out who they ranked as the five worst QBs in the NFL.

28. Sam Darnold

29. Tua Tagovailoa

30. Zach Wilson

31. Jalen Hurts

32. Drew Lock

All of the bottom tier quarterbacks are younger guys who PFF don’t see taking the next step in their development.

I’m interested how this algorithm ranks guys who have yet to take a snap in the NFL. For instance, PFF has Justin Fields ranked as the 25th best, and Zach Wilson as the 30th. Maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s entirely too early to start comparing quarterbacks before they have even played a preseason game in the NFL.

I’m sure some guy will be out to prove Pro Football Focus wrong this season.
