Police Arrest 67 Lakers Fans At The Staples Center In Post Finals Victory Celebration

Sunday night was a crazy night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The police arrested 67 Lakers fans in a post-finals victory celebration. And it looked like it was absolute madness. Hundreds of fans gathered outside the arena, despite the fact that the team was still in Orlando, Florida. The celebration had everything from fireworks to a man in an actual plastic bubble. Either he really wanted to be protected from exposure to COVID or he was celebrating the circumstances of the Lakers winning the finals in the bubble at Disney World. I’ll leave that for you to decide.

There were so many people at the rally that law enforcement declared an unlawful assembly in an attempt to get people to go home. Hey Lakers fans, remember we are still facing a global pandemic? That’s kind of the reason the team had to play all the way across the country in Florida. But hey, nevermind the pandemic. People showed up and it got rowdy pretty quickly.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Lakers, but wow that looks pretty scary. Ultimately, the police arrested 61 people for failing to disperse, 5 for looting, and 1 for vandalism. One police officer was injured in the midst of the chaos.  Suffering a hand injury from a bottle somebody threw at him (TMZ Sports). Not all of the Lakers fans were combative though. Several fans were peacefully waving Lakers flags and others were chanting Kobe’s name. However, there were times when fans got aggressive with the police. Some even tried to kick in the windshield of a cop car.

Inevitably, the Lakers defeated the Heat in game 6 of the NBA Finals. I understand this calls for celebration, but there is a time and a place. Leave the celebrating to the team, Lakers fans. At least for now.
