Whacky Yankees Announcer John Sterling Had His Life Saved After Being stuck In Hurricane Ida Flooding

New York Yankees radio announcer John Sterling was saved by the team's Spanish announcer Rickie Ricardo after being stuck in Hurricane Ida's flood

FILE - In this Sept. 25, 2009 file photo shows New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling sitting in his booth before a baseball game against the Boston Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in New York. Sterling has called every New York Yankees game since 1989. That streak is about to end. Feeling a little run down, the team’s radio play-by-play announcer will finally take a breather this weekend when the Yankees play a four-game series at Tampa Bay beginning Thursday, July 4, 2019_ his 81st birthday. New York Yankees announcer John Sterling, the guy who has all the personalized home run calls for everyone on the team, found himself in a lot of trouble on Wednesday night.

As the after affects of Hurricane Ida were ravaging NYC, Sterling tried to drive through the streets to get himself home.

Because of COVID-19 protocols, Yankees radio broadcasters are not currently traveling with the team, which means John Sterling was calling the game in LA from Yankee Stadium. When the game let out late at night, Sterling was forced to drive his way home.

But on his way, the roads proved to be too treacherous, and Sterling ended up being stuck. And during an appearance on WFAN on Wednesday, Yankees Spanish broadcaster Rickie Ricardo revealed that he had to go rescue John Sterling from the Edgewater neighborhood.

Luckily for John Sterling, Rickie Ricardo’s car was able to make it through the flood in time to get to him. And luckily for us, too, because now we’ll still be able to hear all of Sterling’s one-of-a-kind calls.

Sure, John Sterling might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but he brings a unique approach to broadcasting that I happen to appreciate.

Check out some of his classic work:

Thank god Rickie Ricardo was there to save John Sterling.

Be safe out there on the East Coast with Hurricane Ida’s flooding.
