The MLB and the Players Association just pledged $10 Million to promote diversity and increase Black participation in baseball. The goal is to increase diversity from youth baseball all the way up to the Major League. The $10 million will be paid in the form of grants over the next few years through 2024. The MLB announced the enormous effort and detailed several of the Players Alliance designed programs they hope will change the culture of baseball.

Diversity In Major League Baseball and All Levels Of The Sport
Similar to the Hockey Diversity Alliance, the MLB players association is committed to making baseball a more inclusive sport. A sport that is welcoming to black culture. However, it cannot be done with money alone. The money is great, but changing the culture of a sport is a group effort. According to MLB, the money is designed to “Increase participation in baseball among Black youth and young adults through efforts that include funding individual leagues, equipment donations, special tournaments, clinics, and playground activities”. This goes as far as supporting baseball programs in public schools, providing grants, scholarships, and community services.

We all know that baseball is a sport with significant black influence. It is excellent to see the MLB players association pushing to make baseball a more inclusive sport at all levels. It has been over 70 years since Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in baseball. However, recent events prove that there is still a lack of equality in American culture. The effects of social injustice have trickled down to sports, making it evident that we still have a long way to go as a nation. The NBA, WNBA, NHL, and now the MLB have done a beautiful job in making a push for diversity in sports. I can’t wait to see what this $10 Million does to continue to fight the ever-looming fight of social injustice.
Join major league sports in fighting the fight for diversity. It is much more than money. It’s actions. Do what you can. Vote, have the difficult conversations, and most importantly be an anti-racist. It costs you nothing to be kind to others. Be a part of the movement. Stand with the MLB and the other major league sports in the fight against social inequality. Finally, live a life of love, rather than hate.
