Mike Budenholzer must not watch much sports talk, read a lot of articles or pay attention to any NBA discussions at all, because this take has gone contrary to what everyone around the league thinks. It is a well-known belief that this year is absolutely championship-or-bust for a Milwaukee Bucks team that has been consistently dominant in the regular season, but finds ways to falter in the big games.
Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer doesn’t agree with the championship or bust mentality.
Mike Budenholzer says the #Bucks goal is a title and they have the type of team that can compete for one, but:
“To think that a season is championship or bust is certainly not how we’ve approached it.”

My first thought here is that Budenholzer does not want to say anything that would insinuate that he might lose Giannis Antetokounmpo after this NBA season. Giannis will become a free agent at year’s end if the Bucks don’t find a way to extend their superstar before the Dec. 23 deadline. That means, this could very well be the last dance with Giannis and the Milwaukee Bucks.
Bucks fans responded to Budenholzer’s claim with a lot of hostility, and rightfully so. However, I think Budenholzer is just trying to dave his ass here. It’s also probably a good idea not to put too much pressure on your young team if you’re Mike Budenholzer. Championship or bust sounds pretty daunting, even if it is the case. I think deep down, Budenholzer knows that he better make a deep run in the NBA playoffs this year, or it could be his job.
