The Detroit Lions and the Los Angeles Rams traded Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff in a mega-deal sending two first-rounders to Detroit. The Rams and Sean McVay had moved on from Goff, however, the trade still came as a surprise. The Rams look to upgrade their quarterback with the veteran Stafford. Having said that, Stafford knows he has big shoes to fill in L.A. Stafford and Goff exchanged texts after the trade. It started with Stafford reaching out to Goff, letting him know he is aware of how big a role Goff had on the Rams, and wishing him well in his new environment.

“I shot him a text. We texted a little bit,” Stafford told Mitch Albom, per ProFootballTalk. “Just told him that I know going out there I’ve got big shoes to fill.”
“It’s not lost on me that he was in the Super Bowl just a few years ago,” Matthew Stafford said. “He’s a really good player in his own right. I just wanted to let him know that I appreciate him as a player and obviously, to reach out to me if there was anything he needed when it comes to Detroit, just as far as advice or places to stay, anything.”
Jared Goff seemed to have a positive response, according to Stafford. “I know that he feels that he can reach out to me, and I know I can reach out to him with anything in L.A. too. So it’s been good.”
It’s good that there are no hard feelings between the quarterbacks and that they can still be a support system for each other. The trade ultimately benefits both players. Stafford gets to play for a team built to win and Goff gets to walk into a fresh environment where he’ll be the day one starter. Win-win. Look for both quarterbacks to be big leaders in their new roles.
