Is Marcus Mariota the right guy to take over for Tom Brady for the long term with the New England Patriots? If rumors are to be believed, the Bill Belichick may be eyeballing the former second overall draft pick.

The New England Patriots opted to give Cam Newton a one-year deal during the first year of life without Brady. It didn’t work out. Cam was clearly not the same guy as he was in his early days with the Panthers, and he didn’t have many weapons to work with. Bill Belichick and the Pats will now try to find the next quarterback once again in the offseason.

According to a report, Oakland Raiders backup QB Marcus Mariota could be that guy.

Via The Athletic:

“Multiple sources, including one GM, told The Athletic the Raiders’ preference is to move Marcus Mariota and keep Carr, unless someone makes them a ridiculous offer for Carr. Mariota has been mentioned as a possibility in New England, with the hope he could become for the Patriots what Ryan Tannehill has been for Mike Vrabel in Tennessee. Mariota has a $10.7 million cap hit, which is how much the Raiders can save — with no dead money — if they can deal him.”

Marcus Mariota as drafted #2 overall by the Titans in the 2015 draft. During his four years under center in Tennessee, Mariota showed some flashes but couldn’t do enough to keep his job. The team moved on to Ryan Tannehill, and have seen a heavy uptick in production.

Last season Mariota was backing up for Derek Carr in Oakland, but according to this report, they’d like to move on from the Oregon Ducks product.

I’m not sure Marcus Mariota will be able to bring New England back to prominence, but I do think he has some game. It’ll be interesting to see if he gets another shot as a starting quarterback in the league.
