Toronto Maple Leafs captain John Tavares was the victim of an extremely scary inadvertent hit to his head during Game 1 of the series against the Canadiens on Thursday night.

Tavares was checked to the ice, and almost simultaneously, Corey Perry was skating by, and caught Tavares with a knee to his head.

As trainers came onto the ice, Tavares was clearly in rough shape, and had to be stretchered off. Luckily, he was able to give a thumbs up as he was heading to the locker room.

After he was taken off the ice, the Maple Leafs confirmed that John Tavares was taken to a nearby hospital.

We’ll keep looking for updates on John Tavares. For now, the entire hockey community can only hope that he’s alright after one of the scariest injuries we’ve seen in a long time.
