Manchester United Fans Storm Pitch At Old Trafford As Part Of Protests Against Ownership

Manchester United protests Old Trafford

Things got wild across the pond on Sunday. Famed English Premier League soccer club Manchester United was getting set to take on Liverpool in a massive match. Little did they know that an organized protest outside of Old Trafford would spill onto the pitch.

Fans of Man U broke into the stadium and stormed the field as part of a protest against the club’s American ownership.

It was a chaotic scene, to say the least.

If the protestors’ goal was to get their voices and cause trending on social media, mission accomplished. #GlazersOut took Twitter by storm both during and after Sunday’s events.

Despite Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pleading for the protests to be peaceful beforehand, punches were reportedly thrown in the melee outside of Old Trafford.

Inside Old Trafford, flares were shot off as the protestors gathered with voices and signs alike to speak out against the team’s ownership.

One protestor even decided to hang out on top of the net. That perch didn’t turn out to be a safe one.

Hey, I had to try and slip some humor into this wild story somehow!

Sunday’s scheduled match against Liverpool was ultimately canceled due to safety concerns.

All of this disgruntlement stems from opposition to the Glazer family, who have been the owners of Man U since 2005. Joel and Avram Glazer serve as the co-chairmen of the team.

The purchase of the team sent the club spiraling into debt, something that many fans have been outspoken about ever since.

The discontent with the Glazers has gained momentum in recent weeks after the club failed to form part of a breakaway European Super League. The Guardian reported back in 2018 that the Glazers’ ownership has drained more than 1 billion pounds out of the club in interest charges.

The Glazer family also owns the reigning NFL Super Bowl Champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
