Is Lovie Smith trying to get Deshaun Watson to stay?

Doesn’t look  like it. Among the decisions Lovie Smith has to make is who should be the Texans’ starting quarterback in 2022.

Currently on Houston’s roster is second-year quarterback Davis Mills, veteran Tyrod Taylor and Deshaun Watson. During a recent interview on The Rich Eisen Show, Smith was asked about the quarterback situation as it currently stands.

According to the Texans new coach, Mills is their man.

“Of course, one of the first things people want to know is, ‘How about the quarterback position?’” Smith said. “And I love what Davis Mills did last year. You know, Rich, when you come in as a rookie like he did last year, you start off going against the No. 1 defense, so I got a chance to see a lot of him. And then when he moved up and started playing, I liked his demeanor, can make all the throws, he’s smart, so I feel real good about Davis leading our team, we’ve just got to get better people around him.”

Davis Mills appeared in 13 games last season as a rookie for the Texans, starting in 11 of them.

Mills completed 66.8% of his passes for 2,664 yards with 16 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Not bad stats with all things considered.
