Liverpool are Premier League champions for the first time in 30 years, thanks to Manchester City suffering a 2-1 loss at Chelsea. Thousands of Liverpool fans kicked COVID concerns to the curb and rallied at Anfield stadium for a title party.
Liverpool’s Premier League title win followed Champions League and Club World Cup victories last year. Liverpool finished just a point behind City last season, but the wait is finally over. Manager Jurgen Klopp broke down in tears after his squad clinched the Premier League title.

“It’s such a big moment, I am completely overwhelmed,” Klopp told Sky Sports. “It’s incredible. I hope you stay at home or go in front of your house if you want, but not more. We do it together in this moment and it is a joy to do it for you.” Despite Klopp’s advice, thousands of fans rallied at Anfield stadium to celebrate the long-anticipated title. It’s also pretty ironic that Liverpool fans were literally waving red flags in celebration, but even COVID couldn’t hold them back. Dr. John Ashton reported that Liverpool players and team affiliates have been getting tested biweekly. Although, he did admit that this kind of massive gathering is an enormous risk for spreading the virus.
The scene at Anfield is still pretty alarming, but I have to admit that it is difficult for me to be overly critical of it. Soccer is the sport that unites (or divides) the people in Europe. Baseball is America’s pastime, and I happen to root for the team that endured the longest World Series drought in MLB history. I was in college at the University of Illinois when the Cubs broke the curse of the billy goat and won the World Series for the first time in 107 grueling years.
Had we been in the midst of a global pandemic back in 2016, it’s hard for me to imagine the scene looking any different than it did that day. I know what it’s like to root for a team that continues to fall short, so I feel for Liverpool fans. I can’t say that I support their actions, but I won’t pretend that I don’t understand. Congrats to Coach Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool organization. I hope the team and all the fans are staying safe. I do want American sports back, though. So go back home and sit on your couches, Liverpool fans, you are officially in timeout.
