Lauri Markkanen Reportedly Blew Up Potential Spurs Deal By Asking For Way Too Much Money

Chicago Bulls forward Lauri Markkanen has been on the trading block for a while now, and with him being a restricted free agent this year, he seemed like a prime candidate to be traded away in a sign-and-trade.

Sure enough, when the Bulls had interest in Demar DeRozan, Markkanen was being floated around as a potential trade piece to send back to San Antonio.

However, when Markkanen was going through negotiations with the Spurs it was reported that he couldn’t agree to terms because he was asking for a boatload of cash.

“The Spurs had interest in Lauri Markkanen,” Brian Windhorst said on The Hoops Collective Podcast. “They have had interest in Lauri Markkanen for a long time. He fits the profile of the kind of player they like – international player, shooter, still in development but they can develop him. But, from what I understand, Markkanen just wanted so much money that the Spurs were like ‘we can’t pay that.’”

Earlier in the offseason it was reported that Lauri Markkanen had some mutual interest with the Dallas Mavericks, but so far nothing has materialized on that front either.

The Bulls did give Markkanen a qualifying offer, officially making him a restricted free agent.

However, it appears as though he would really like to get more than the $9 Million being offered by Chicago. If he were to accept that deal, he’d be playing on a suddenly revamped Bulls roster, and would likely see a dip in minutes affect his worth when he hits the market after the season.

It might be time for Lauri Markkanen to change his asking price, or he could be screwing up his future.
