Kyle Shanahan Sheds Some More Light On The Brandon Aiyuk Situation

San Francisco 49ers fans are calling for Kyle Shanahan's head after losing to Colt McCoy and the Cardinals on Sunday afternoon

After limited playing time resulted in San Francisco 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk having no receptions during their week one matchup against the Lions, many were wondering if the young wideout was in Kyle Shanahan’s dog house.

When asked about the situation, Shanahan didn’t necessarily make matters any better.

“He’s been a little inconsistent because he’s been in and out with his injury and stuff,” Shanahan said earlier in the week. “If he wants to be out there every single play, he’s got to be a lot better than the guy behind him.”

But now, Kyle Shanahan is trying to walk back some of the comments he made about Brandon Aiyuk, and he’s adamant that there’s nothing going on internally.

“No. It’s not a doghouse. It’s just a pretty simple thing,” Shanahan said, via 49ers WebZone.com. “Trent Sherfield has played at a very high level every single day for the entire training camp. Aiyuk got off to a little bit of a slow start, and Trent was playing very well. Then when Aiyuk started to catch him, and, to me, was about to go by him, which was going to be the third preseason game, where I think you guys would have seen that, and he would have got that spot completely back, he tweaked his hamstring. And then he has about 10 days off, and his first practice was Wednesday before the Detroit game. So we planned on going into that completely rotating them and giving Trent the spot. One, because Aiyuk hadn’t played a lot of football coming off the injury, and two, because Trent Sherfield earned it. And it was nothing more than that.”

Right now, it simply looks like Kyle Shanahan thinks he has other options who are better than Brandon Aiyuk.

But after such an electric rookie season from Aiyuk, are we really buying that explanation?
