The NFL free agency period is heating up and one of the remaining stars left is Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the New York Jets have been “having conversations” with the former Steelers wideout. It is unlikely JuJu remains in Pittsburgh as he has been telling teammates he expects to sign elsewhere. He even voted on a Sports Illustrated poll, suggesting that he would not be returning to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

JuJu Smith-Schuster has chemistry with Jets quarterback Sam Darnold from their college days at USC. That could potentially play a big role in his signing should the Jets decide to move forward with Darnold. JuJu Smith-Schuster and Darnold were teammates at USC for the 2016 season. They won the Rose Bowl together in Smith-Schuster’s final game for the Trojans. While the Jets would be a downgrade from the Steelers, this could be a compelling reason for JuJu Smith-Schuster to join the team.

The Jets kicked off their free agency by signing former Titans wide receiver Corey Davis to a three-year, $37.5 million deal. Davis is expected to be their new No. 1 receiver. Should the Jets decided to sign JuJu-Smith-Schuster, he would likely become their number one option at receiver. Unlike the Steelers, the Jets have the cap space to be able to pay JuJu what he wants. Even with the recent signing of wide receiver Corey Davis. Per OverTheCap, the Jets currently have the most cap space in the league, boasting over $50 million to spend.

So would JuJu Smith-Schuster be a good fit for the Jets? I certainly think so. He was more productive with the Steelers when he had Antonio Brown as his running mate. Corey Davis certainly isn’t Antonio Brown by any stretch of the imagination. However, he would be able to draw some coverage away from JuJu. Look out for more updates on JuJu Smith-Schuster as the free agency period progresses.
