Tennis great John McEnroe is known to speak his mind during his commentary, but it appears that he may have taken it too far when talking about 18-year-old British star Emma Raducanu.

On Monday, Raducanu was forced to retire in the second round of her match against Ajla Tomljanovic due to some breathing issues. Right away, John McEnroe was skeptical that the young star was actually having health issues.

“It’s a shame. I feel bad for Emma. It appears like it just got too much, which is understandable,” John McEnroe said, per Yahoo. “It makes you look at the guys and girls who have been around for so long and wonder how they handle it. Hopefully she will learn from this experience.

“Maybe it’s not a shame this has happened right now when she is 18. I played this tournament at 18 and in a way I was happy I lost. I was able to understand what it would take to make it. Allow her to take some deep breaths and maybe get some wildcards.”

After the bizarre insinuation by John McEnroe, Emma Raducanu took to social media to explain what she was dealing with during the match.

It seems like Emma Raducanu has a good head on her shoulder. And we’re happy to see that she’s feeling better after having some issues during her match.

John McEnroe has to realize that it’s in his best interest to keep a lot of his opinions to himself until he gathers some actual evidence. Especially when the topic involves a teenager’s health.

We’ll see if John McEnroe decides to issue an apology to Emma Raducanu.
