Jimmy Garoppolo was a popular guy in New England when he was Tom Brady’s back up quarterback from 2014-2016. Obviously, Brady was the “guy” for the Patriots, so Jimmy G landed in San Francisco. In his three years with the 49ers, Garoppolo has dealt with the injury bug, but has also been a pretty consistent quarterback. He even took the team to the Super Bowl in 2020.

Now, it’s being reported that the 49ers are looking to move on from Garoppolo, and Bill Belichick might be doing everything he can to get him back to the Pats. According to a reports, Garoppolo is the main option for the Patriots.

“From what I gather from talking to people this week, over the past week, Jimmy Garoppolo still is far and away their Plan A,” Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard recently said on his podcast, as transcribed by Boston.com. “That, if they had to draw it up, exactly the optimal situation for the Patriots for this coming season, it’s Jimmy G coming back here. And of course, that’s all dependent on the 49ers doing something.”

It’s no secret that Cam Newton wasn’t the answer for Bill Belichick, but I’m also not sure if I’m buying all the buzz behind a Jimmy Garoppolo reunion.

First of all, Jimmy G is under contract with another team as it stands. Sure, Garoppolo could be a trade target for the Pats, but to let it leak that he’s your ‘Plan A’ would be borderline tampering. Something that doesn’t happen in a Patriots organization that is normally incredibly discrete about every decision they make.

If the 49ers can’t land a Russell Wilson or Deshaun Watson, I don’t really see how they’re moving off of Jimmy Garoppolo as their starting quarterback.
