Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh Confirms Call From Donald Trump After Week 2 Win: ‘You’re Greater Than Vince Lombardi’

The midsummer race for Ohio's traditionally Republican 15th Congressional District wouldn't typically get much national attention. But it's suddenly becoming a high-stakes test of Trump's endorsement power, which he has wielded as a cudgel to silence opposition in the GOP. Donald Trump loves to let the superlatives fly.

Former President Donald Trump called Jets head coach Robert Saleh following New York’s Week 2 comeback win against the Cleveland Browns. Saleh confirmed the story Monday on The Michael Kay Show. Per ESNY:

“Love him or hate him — and I’m not a politician, I’m a football coach — taking a call from a current or former president is pretty cool. … It was surprising. If you would have told 20-year-old me that one day I would get a call from a president of the United States congratulating us on a win as an NFL head coach … it’s pretty surreal.”

According to the report, Saleh, who said he wasn’t expecting the call, talked with Trump for “a few minutes.”

Last week, Trump spoke about the New York  Jets’ win over the Cleveland  Browns during a rally in North Carolina.

“I called the coach because I think the coach is a great guy. General manager, too. I said, ‘Coach, you’re greater than Vince Lombardi, because Vince Lombardi never did that.’ He was never able to pull out a game like that, because that was the craziest thing I’ve ever seen. The game was done, it was over.”

Robert Saleh and his Jets scored a pair of touchdowns with less than two minutes remaining for the 31-30 comeback win.

Trump always finds a way to stay in the news.
