Jake Arrieta Wanted A Reporter To Remove Mask Following Another Disappointing Start

Things have not gone according to plan in Jake Arrieta’s reunion to the Chicago Cubs.

After a highly successful tenure from 2014-18 saw Arrieta win the Cy Young and World Series, the return on a one-year deal for 2021 has been an utter disaster.

Arrieta got shelled by the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday night, and now sits at an ungodly 6.88 ERA on the season.

When speaking to the media after the game, Jake Arrieta snapped at a reporter who was wearing a mask while asking him about how he mentors young pitchers.

Via The Athletic’s Patrick Mooney:

Jake Arrieta sat in the Wrigley Field interview room late Wednesday night for a video conference after a 10-0 loss to the Brewers. While giving an answer about hoping to mentor young pitchers, Arrieta looked at the screen and told a reporter up in the press box: “I’d love you to take your mask off. I don’t think anybody’s around you.”

Later on in the presser, Jake Arrieta was asked what exactly has gone wrong this season, and he didn’t have too much of an answer.

“Would I have liked to pitch better throughout the season?” Arrieta asked himself after the game via NBC. “Of course. Now the job description includes a lot more than just that. It’s about helping these young guys grow. And finding any way that I can in my power to have success, and that’s important.”

It remains to be seen whether the Cubs will stick with Jake Arrieta for the remainder on their season. But regardless, it will be an extremely unfortunate ending for him on the North Side of Chicago.
