It Sure Sounds Like The White Sox Want A.J. Hinch Or Alex Cora To Be Their Next Manager

In a somewhat surprising move, the White Sox and manager Rick Renteria agreed to “part ways” after Renteria spent four years at the helm. The move came after the Sox were eliminated by the Oakland Athletics in the Wild Card Round.

The White Sox have a really good young team, and one would think that it would be an enticing place for any manager to go. They will be all-in on winning the World Series in 2021. That should excite any potential manager. A couple of the top names being thrown around by media and fans alike are recently suspended managers A.J. Hinch and Alex Cora

Cora Or Hinch The Answer In Chicago?

At first, I was surprised to hear these names being thrown around, but it could make a lot of sense for the Sox to give either of these accomplished managers the keys to their young, exciting team.

In general manager Rick Hahn’s presser today, he added to the speculation that the Sox could be interested in the embattled managers.

“This is an opportunity for us as an organization,” Hahn said Monday. “Ultimately, I think the best candidate or the ideal candidate is going to be someone who has experience with a championship organization in recent years. Recent October experience with a championship organization would be ideal. But we’re going to keep an open mind.”

So, Rick Hahn has really opened the flood gates on the potential for Hinch or Cora to become the next manager of the team. Both men have had success in a championship organization in recent years. Not only that, but managers who have won the World Series in recent year aren’t really available, unless you look at Hinch or Cora.

Although, another interesting name has entered the mix. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the White Sox have reached out to Tony La Russa to gauge his interest in taking over as the team’s skipper.

This one seems like more of a long shot for me. The 76-year-old La Russa has not managed a game since winning the World Series with the Cardinals in 2011. He has also turned down many interview opportunities with only clubs since then. He worked in the Diamondbacks front office for a while, and is now a senior advisor for the Los Angeles Angels. I can’t see La Russa making his return to the dugout, although the opportunity to coach a team as talented as the White Sox could make him think about it.

For what it’s worth, I think the White Sox will end up hiring hiring Hinch or Cora. It makes sense. Both are still young and know how to navigate a winning clubhouse. They also know what it takes to win, and to win in October. One of Rick Renteria’s biggest fallacies was his in-game managing, especially in big games. That won’t be a problem with A.J. Hinch or Alex Cora. They’ve been there before, pulled all the right strings, and they won’t panic.

Which guy makes more sense in Chicago? I think it’s Cora. Being bilingual will help him communicate with a Sox team made up of a lot of Latino players. Hinch or Cora would both bring some baggage, but I think it’s worth it if you’re the White Sox. It’s not about being the most liked team, it’s about winning. Hinch and Cora have proven that they can do that.
