The Ohio State debacle appears to be headed for a conclusion. The Big Ten originally ruled that teams would have to play six games this season to qualify for the Big Ten Championship game. Ohio State has only played in five. If Ohio State was deemed ineligible, it would be the Indiana Hoosiers who would get the nod to play Northwestern in the championship game.

However, the Big Ten has reversed course. Today, the conference decided to change its rules in order to allow Ohio State into the Big Ten Championship. Indiana released this statement on the matter.

Indiana opts to take the high road here. “We had a chance to earn our spot in the Big Ten Championship Game, but ultimately fell a touchdown short on the road against a great Ohio State team,” Athletic Director Scott Dolson writes.

Look, the Big Ten was put between a rock and a hard place with this decision, but I think they got it right. Not allowing Ohio State (who has a legitimate shot at a National Championship) to play in the championship game would be a bad look for the conference. The best teams should always be represented, and Ohio State is the best team in the Big Ten. With that being said, rules are rules, but this is also 2020. We’re all making this stuff up as we go, and I think the Big Ten is justified in doing just that.

That isn’t to take anything away from Tom Allen and the Indiana Hoosiers. They’re having a phenomenal season, and it’s looking like they could be building something special over there in Bloomington.
