Gonzaga Lands Florida Guard Andrew Nembhard: Ranking The Top-Five Transfers Eligible For The 2021-2022 Season

Gonzaga head basketball coach Mark Few will have no shortage of talent in Spokane after landing top transfer Andrew Nembhard. The Florida transfer will have to sit out for the 2020-2021 season, but in a time when it is unclear if there will even be a season, I thought it would be interesting to do a power ranking of the top transfers that will be eligible the following year. Let’s take a closer look.

1. Mac McClung, 6-2, 186 lbs, G, So., Georgetown

Committed to Texas Tech 

McClung is a sneaky good athlete with a deep ball that showed tremendous improvement in his sophomore season with the Hoyas. He did suffer a foot injury but averaged 15.7 points per game while healthy. McClung will be a great addition to the already extremely talented Red Raider backcourt.

2. Olivier Sarr, 7-0, 255 pounds, C, Jr., Wake Forest

Committed to Kentucky 

Sarr was one of the most highly sought out transfers in the wake of his announcement to enter his name into the transfer portal. The big man nearly averaged a double-double with an impressive 13.7 points and 9.0 rebounds per contest. Kentucky is not known for being a very veteran team, so Sarr’s experience will be a great asset for John Calipari’s Wildcats.

3. Andrew Nembhard, 6-5, 193 pounds, PG, Soph., Florida

Committed to Gonzaga 

Nembhard has been a perennial starter in his two years at Florida but will be heading to Spokane to finish his college career. I don’t blame Nembhard for wanting to join a powerhouse team, but it is an intriguing move. I say that because 2021 marks the first year college athletes in Florida will be allowed to make money for their name, image or likeness. Nembhard has good size for a guard and should fit right into the offensive scheme Mark Few has developed at Gonzaga.

4. L.J. Figueroa, 6-6, 195 pounds, SG, Jr., St. John’s

Committed to Oregon

Figueroa is a bit of an underappreciated player on the national level but will likely get more recognition in the PAC-12 at Oregon. He is a consistent scorer with a good mid-range game and can be a flamethrower from deep if he gets hot. Figueroa averaged 14.5 points and 4.5 rebounds while shooting 36.5% from 3. In my opinion, this is the best pickup of the aforementioned players in terms of scheme and skill set. 

5. Alan Griffin, 6-5, 195 pounds, SG, So., Illinois

Committed to Syracuse

This one hurts a bit as an Illinois fan and alum, but I can’t say that it’s a bad move for the kid. Griffin’s numbers don’t necessarily jump out at you, but he is an effective scorer and was a great spark off the bench for the Illini. Griffin averaged a mere 18.1 minutes per game for the Illini, so he will be looking for a more advanced role under veteran Coach Jim Boeheim. In his limited role, Griffin shot north of 41% from the field so look for him to make a big impact in his new role. He may be an Illini no more, but at least he will still be suiting up in orange and blue.

I sure hope we don’t have to go another year without March Madness but if we do, look for these guys to make a big reappearance when college basketball does resume.
