Marvin Lewis interviewed with the Houston Texans for the vacant head coaching job.

Lewis, currently the co-defensive coordinator at Arizona State University, was the head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals for 16 years from 2003 to 2018. Over the course of his tenure, he guided the Bengals to seven playoff appearances and four AFC North titles.

The blunder on his resume is failing to win a playoff game despite seven appearances, including five straight postseason losses from 2011 to 2015. Despite his abhorrent postseason reputation, Lewis receives a lot of credit for his efforts in bringing Cincinnati to relevancy. Cincinnati is known around the league to being run by a stingy front office and a “cheap” owner.

Lewis was a defensive assistant for 11 years prior to his lone head coaching job for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Baltimore Ravens and Washington Redskins.

If he is hired, he would become Houston’s sixth head coach, including interim head coach Romeo Crennel. Only Bill O’Brien, who was fired this season, has a winning record with the franchise.

Lewis is known for his defensive prowess, authoring six top-10 scoring defenses including two top-5 defenses. Hiring Lewis would help solve or mitigate one of the Texans’ glaring issues. Houston currently possesses the 24th ranked defense, allowing 27.6 points per game.

Other head coaching candidates are San Francisco’s defensive coordinator Robert Saleh, Kansas City’s offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley and former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell to name a few.
