The Cleveland Indians will be changing their team name and mascot after years of backlash and calls for action from Native Americans and activists. This come during the same year that The Washington Football Team made the switch from the Redskins.
It seems like a shift is going on in sports, and Native American team names will no longer be tolerated. So, does that mean more change is on the horizon. The Chicago Blackhawks and other teams were put under the microscope on social media after Cleveland announced they were making the switch.
#Chiefs #Braves #Blackhawks have all said recently they have no plans to surrender to name-change bullies. Please God let some organizations show some spine. #Cleveland #Indians

Always felt like the Indians team name wasn’t as bad as say… the Chicago Blackhawks. Who use this logo. pic.twitter.com/I47HDTf4wp

The Chicago Blackhawks have said in the past that they have no plans to change their name. They have asked for support from Native American community leaders, and often invite them to games. They use this as an excuse to keep their mascot, and continue on with their long-standing tradition of “respecting the Indian”.
I’m not so sure the Blackhawks are completely justified in keeping their name, and it seems to me that the fix would be pretty easy.
Just change the name from “Chicago Blackhawks” to “Chicago Hawks”, really doesn’t seem that hard. Their mascot is already a hawk that goes by “Tommy Hawk”. The team could even keep their logo relatively the same.
Really doesn’t look that much different if you ask me. However, you would still have lifelong Blackhawks fans distraught and chalking up the switch as another burden brought on by “cancel culture”. It’s really a lose-lose situation for decision makers within the Blackhawks organization. If it was me, I’d just change the name. We don’t need to be using Native American team names in 2020.
