Dustin Poirier Wants A Third Conor McGregor Fight For The Lightweight Title

Dustin Poirier took to social media to savagely troll Conor McGregor ahead of their trilogy fight on July 10 in Las Vegas

Dustin Poirier considers himself the UFC lightweight champion at this moment. However, he doesn’t have the belt. Not yet at least.

Poirier shockingly defeated Conor McGregor in the second round of their fight last month. With Khabib Nurmagomedov seemingly staying retired, it would make sense that Poirier would be the guy with the title. But he’ll need one more fight to win the lightweight belt.

Poirier wouldn’t mind if his next fight is a trilogy fight with McGregor.

“It’s 1-1,” Poirier said via ESPN. “I knocked him out; he knocked me out. The rubber match, it does make sense.”

Dustin Poirier went on to say that he’s not sure the UFC would offer him another Conor fight with the title at stake.

“I’m not sure if the UFC would do that,” Poirier said. “Why wasn’t that one for the belt? Politics? We’re chasing Khabib? What’s going on here? … I have no idea what direction [the UFC is going to] move in.”

Conor McGregor’s trainer John Kavanagh lobbied for another fight with Poirier last week, but there have been no talks of a rematch yet.

Dustin Poirier went on to tout his record while sharing his belief that he is the best active fighter in the lightweight division right now.

“Who else has put the résumé together that I have in my last six, seven fights, whatever it has been?” Poirier said. “Also beating Conor, a two-weight world champion, adds another world champion to the list of guys I’ve taken out. … I think I’m most deserving to be in a title fight out of all these guys.”

It is likely that a Dustin Poirier-Conor McGregor trilogy fight will happen at some point, it’s just a matter of whether it would be Poirier’s next fight or not. Justin Gaethje, Michael Chandler, and Charles Oliveira have also emerged as potential candidates to fight Dustin Poirier next.
