Documentary ‘A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem’ Set to Air in January

The film the NFL doesn’t want you to see. The NFL has enough problems trying to finish the season without everything blowing up. Now this. There haven’t been many fans in attendance so far this season, and the cheerleaders have all but vanished from the sidelines.  Over the last few years NFL cheerleaders have been in the news a ton, as the pay gap for them has been exposed, with many making next to nothing. Some earning as little as $5/hour.

The new documentary will focus on a few stories in particular. Lacy, a Raiders cheerleader, and Maria, a former Buffalo Bills cheerleader.

“This film is about women’s fight for value in the workplace,” Yu Gu, director of A Woman’s Work: The NFL’s Cheerleader Problem, said in the press release. “I wanted to show the work these women put in behind the spectacle, and the unjust environment where this work takes place. By breaking down what’s happening in this cultural monolith that is the NFL, we aim to shine a light on how gender inequality operates at an institutional level, and inspire audiences to follow in the footsteps of these brave women who are fighting to end it. With a platform like Independent Lens, we’re hopeful that we can educate communities and spark conversations all over the U.S. on this issue as women continue to fight against inequality in all spheres of life today.”

This should be an interesting watch.

A Woman’s Work premieres on PBS on January 4, 2021 and will also be available to stream on the PBS Video App.
