Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams played a massive role in their Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers in 2020.

During the COVID season, Williams, like many other players, decided to opt out. He had some family illnesses going on, and he didn’t want to risk it. Who are we to judge?

Unfortunately for Damien Williams, he now no longer has a spot on the Chiefs. The team has decided to part ways with their former featured back, handing their backfield to rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire, and saving $2.1 Million in the process.

According to reports, Damien Williams is ‘stunned’ by the decision.

Damien Williams’ reasoning for opting out makes the whole situation that much more disheartening. His mom was diagnosed with stage four cancer prior to the season, and he wanted to be with her instead of risking it during a pandemic.

Sometimes, sports can be a cold, cold, business and Damien Williams is finding that out the hard way. I know, it’s all about winning. But I still can’t help but to think that this isn’t the best look for a Chiefs organization that has been in the news for wrong reasons before during this offseason.

Hopefully Damien Williams catches on somewhere else, and proves he can still be a playmaker in the league.
