Dabo Swinney Joins Brian Kelly In Criticizing Rose Bowl For Not Allowing Parents

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly might be flexing their muscle on the NCAA to make a change, ignoring public safety and basic COVID-19 common sense.

Brian Kelly made news this week when he slammed the NCAA and the Rose Bowl for not allowing parents at the game. He even went as fat as saying that he’s not sure Notre Dame would go to the College Football Playoff if parent aren’t allowed to attend.

“If we’re one of the teams, then I’ll talk to my group and then they’ll come out with a statement,” Kelly said via The Athletic. “It won’t be Brian Kelly’s statement, it will be Notre Dame and our players and they’ll make a statement regarding this. I don’t know what they’re gonna say. They may say, ‘Oh, we’re glad to be in and this is much ado about nothing.’ Or they might say, ‘We don’t wanna play if we can’t get the parents to the game.’”

Dabo Swinney agreed with Kelly that it doesn’t make sense not to allow families at the Rose Bowl.

“It makes no sense to me to put a bunch of kids on a plane and fly them all the way to California to play in an empty stadium,” he said. “That makes zero sense.”

California has a statute in place that no fans can attend sporting events, and the Rose Bowl is set to be a semifinal game. The solution seems pretty obvious to me, just play the game somewhere else. The Rose Bowl won’t even look as cool without fans, anyways.

Dabo Swinney and Brian Kelly will lead Clemson and Notre Dame to battle in the ACC Championship today. The winner is all but guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, but it’s likely that both teams get in. The NCAA is going to have to make a change for the semifinal game. If they don’t, all hell will break loose.
