COVID Cancellation Drops The Wisconsin Badgers From Contention In The Big Ten

For the first time since 1907 the Wisconsin Badgers will not play the Minnesota Golden Gophers this year

For the first time since 1907, the Wisconsin Badgers will not play the Minnesota Golden Gophers in college football.

According to The Athletic, this weekend’s game between Minnesota and Wisconsin has been canceled due to positive COVID-19 tests in Minnesota’s football program. This cancellation means that it is now impossible for Wisconsin to win the Big Ten West, meaning they cannot win the Big Ten in 2020.

The Northwestern Wildcats can secure the Big Ten West with a win in one of their final three games. If they were to reach the Big Ten title game, their date would likely be with Ohio State. While it sucks for Wisconsin to be eliminated due to COVID-19, it does pave the way for one hell of a Cinderella story for Northwestern. Nobody gave them a chance to make any noise this season but the team has quieted their critics all season long.

Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck spoke to The Athletic about the cancellation.

“I am disappointed for our student-athletes and our fans that we will not be able to compete on Saturday, but we need to focus on the health of our student-athletes and staff, which means stopping the spread of the virus,” the Gophers head coach said.

The tradition of the Wisconsin Badgers playing the Minnesota Golden Gophers is part of what makes college football great. The college game has certain traditions that have been passed along for over 100 years and those are important. It’s a shame that we were robbed of that in 2020. We just need to keep reminding ourselves that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This pandemic will be over at some point, it’s just a matter of time.
