Chicago Cubs GM Jed Hoyer Admits Team Looking Like Sellers At The Deadline

Chicago Cubs president of baseball ops Jed Hoyer blames Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, and Javier Baez for not agreeing to contract extensions

A couple of weeks ago, the Chicago Cubs and general manager Jed Hoyer may have been thinking of adding a piece or two and going for one final World Series run – not anymore.

After a grueling 11 game losing streak, the Cubs went from first place in the NL Central, to 8.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers.

When speaking to reporters prior to Thursday night’s game against the Phillies, Hoyer admitted that the dismal 11 game stretch likely put a wretch in any plans to be aggressive at the trade deadline.

“Eleven days ago, we were fully on the buy side of this transaction and everyone was calling about that,” Jed Hoyer told reporters at Wrigley Field on Thursday via ESPN. “Obviously, people are now calling to see which players are available, so it’s a very different scenario than we expected.

“Life comes at you fast. Eleven games changes a lot of things.”

Jed Hoyer was open about looking towards the future after the chance for a playoff birth in Chicago dwindled significantly.

“When you’re in this moment and your playoff odds get into single digits, at this time of the year, you have to keep one eye on the future,” Hoyer said. “You would be irresponsible not to take those phone calls and think through them.

“Milwaukee playing great baseball at the same time was really damaging to our playoff hopes.”

With the Cubs’ fate for 2021 all but cemented, the question now becomes: which players are on the block?

Well, perhaps all of them.

The Chicago Cubs have a lot of talent still. And you’d think Craig Kimbrel, Kris Bryant, Javier Baez, Anthony Rizzo, and maybe some members of their solid bullpen would be intriguing options for teams looking to shore up their roster before making a run at a World Series.

Jed Hoyer knows he has a lot of work to do over the next couple of weeks.

“I’ll be on the phone a lot in the next three weeks,” Hoyer said.
