Chargers Coach Anthony Lynn Says They Considered Cam Newton But Felt “Really Good” About Tyrod Taylor And Easton Stick

ESPN – Chargers coach Anthony Lynn acknowledged in a recent interview with CBS Sports Radio that Los Angeles “absolutely” considered signing Newton, saying, “We did take a look at that.”

When asked why the Chargers ultimately passed on the 2015 NFL MVP, Lynn said he feels “really good about the quarterback room that I have.”

“Tyrod Taylor, Easton Stick — those are guys that a lot of people don’t talk about,” Lynn said in the interview published Saturday by CBS Sports. “[Stick] was a Division I-AA [star] — he won like three national championships. … He’s a hell of a leader, hell of a professional and I think he has a bright future in this league one day.

“But with him, Tyrod Taylor and knowing that we had an opportunity to get one picking sixth in the draft — all those decisions came into play when talking about Cam.”

“Cam’s a tremendous quarterback,” Lynn said. “He’s been an MVP of this league, he’s led his team to a Super Bowl and he’s healthy now, from what I hear. Cam’s going to be on somebody’s roster. He’s going to help somebody win a few games.”

Cam Newton has remained unsigned this offseason after moving on from the team that drafted him in Carolina. One of the logical landing spots after Philip Rivers went to Indianapolis was the Los Angeles Chargers with a depth chart that consists of journeyman Tyrod Taylor, human being who is not a piece of lacrosse equipment Easton Stick and now first-round draft pick Justin Herbert. Despite Tyrod’s stellar showings in our now-concluded eNFL Madden sims for FanDuel (miss you already), one would think that a potential playoff team in a tough AFC West could have used Cam Newton in their stable. Shoulder issues have made him look less than elite over the last two seasons but the hope is he’s healthy and ready to return to form when the new season hopefully starts on time.

But even with the seemingly obvious fit, Cam will remain on the market despite the platitudes Anthony Lynn threw his way. And there are now even less obvious landing spots with the offseason carousel of free agency and draft now concluded. Andy Dalton had to accept a backup deal in Dallas. Jameis Winston had to do the same in New Orleans. Even a logical backup spot like Pittsburgh is allegedly content to roll with Mason Rudolph behind Ben Roethlisberger.

Time is ticking for the former MVP. I’m a little worried for Cam’s ability to find a quality gig before the season starts but I’m just grateful he has more free time for his favorite hobby: spending ungodly amounts of time to post Instagram captions in a font that seems roughly like an alien language or ancient hieroglyphic.
