43-year-old Chad Johnson has not played a snap in the NFL since 2011. But that’s not going to stop him from shooting his shot with the New Orleans Saints.

Saints receiver Michael Thomas is expected to miss the start of the 2021-22 season while rehabbing from ankle surgery. So Johnson has a solution: he thinks the Saints should give him a shot, and he’ll leave the team whenever Michael Thomas is ready to return.

“@Saints Here me out,” Chad Johnson wrote on Twitter. “Even years removed I’m STILL in better shape than 90% of these earthlings & can play until my guy @Cantguardmike comes back, don’t need money/contract just a company car & place to stay.”

Could Chad Johnson Work In New Orleans?

The Saints are setting themselves up for trouble by entering the post-Drew Brees era with a receiving corps that doesn’t have a clear #1 option heading into the season.
Without  Michael Thomas, the Saints current roster Tre’Quan Smith, Marquez Callaway and Deonte Harris as their top three receivers. With this being the case, the Saints receiving corps is destined to be an achilles heel for the team.
“The New Orleans Saints rolled the dice on their receiving corps improving without adding anyone to it (or even finding someone to replace Emmanuel Sanders), and they lost big with Michael Thomas going under the knife in June,” John Sigler of USA Today Sports wrote. “Now he’s expected to miss the start of the 2021 season, and the Saints depth chart at wide receiver looks awful ugly. Here is who they have on the roster right now, along with their 2020 receptions totals:
I’m not sure Sean Payton will turn to Chad Johnson to help fix his offensive issue. But they’ll need to try to tread water somehow until Michael Thomas is able to return to the field.
