The Cardinals aren’t the largest market team and haven’t been known to make big roster moves. However, they are in the early stages of making a blockbuster trade with the Rockies. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the two teams have touched base on a trade including the Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Both teams are still figuring out which other pieces would be involved to reach an agreement.

The Cardinals are in discussions with the Rockies about a deal that would bring the five-time All-Star third baseman to St. Louis, according to major-league sources. No deal appears close, and the other players who might be involved are not known.

As mentioned above, the talks are in the early stages. Although, acquiring a player like Nolan Arenado would be a massive get for the Cardinals. Arenado is a five-time all-star and eight-time golden glove award winner. His defense is what often gets talked about, but he is also a four-time silver slugger.

The biggest hurdle for the Cardinals is that Arenado has a no-trade clause in his contract. He would have to waive it in order to be traded to a new destination. If he were to do so it would give him some leverage over where he was traded. Granted that happens, the Cardinals likely wouldn’t be the only team interested in the Arenado sweepstakes.

Nolan Arenado is coming off of what is arguably his worst career year. Part of that has to do with the shortened season and a lingering shoulder issue he was dealing with. Nevertheless, the Cardinals would be fortunate to have a marquee player like Nolan Arenado.
