Cam Newton Will Now Be Forced To Play Waiting Game Following Surprising Release

After Cam Newton was surprising released by the New England Patriots, reports have indicated that he'll be out of an NFL job for the foreseeable future

Last week, the New England Patriots announced they’d be handing the starting quarterback job to rookie  Mac Jones. But to add insult to injury, Bill Belichick and the Patriots made the decision to give veteran Cam Newton his outright release following the competition.

Despite being linked to a couple different teams after being cut, Cam Newton remains unsigned heading into the NFL season.

And according to reports, it’s likely going to stay that way for a while.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport was asked if there has been any interest in Cam Newton around the league during an appearance on WEEI’s Gresh & Keefe.

“If there is, I haven’t found it,” Rapoport said.“I would never rule anything out in that situation because sometimes teams like to keep it quiet. I just, I haven’t found a possible home.”

Ian Rapoport would go on to say that he wasn’t particularly surprised that the market for Cam Newton has completely dried up.

“And, really that’s not surprising. If you go back last year before the season, (Newton) didn’t have a ton of interest before the Patriots decided to sign him. And this offseason he didn’t have a ton of interest before the Patriots decided to sign him again. So, it’s not like teams are going to look at the preseason tape and say, ‘OK, well, now I believe he can be a starter.’ “

I have my doubts that a team would call Cam Newton even if their starter were to go down for an extended period of time.

Unless he’s willing to take a backup role, Cam might be waiting at home for a call that never comes.
