Brian Scalabrine Thinks Celtics Will Make Historic Head Coach Hire

Boston Celtics fans set up a billboard close to the team's facility calling for Kara Lawson or Becky Hammon to be the next coach

Duke women’s head coach Kara Lawson has had a good run with the Blue Devils, but before that she impressed as an assistant on the Boston Celtics bench.

Her next-level knowledge of basketball was so clear, that former Celtics player and current team analyst Brian Scalabrine thinks she’ll be making a return to the bench as the team’s next head coach.

Kara Lawson was not the name that NBA insiders immediately had in mind when it was announced that Brad Stevens would be moving to the front office to take Danny Ainge’s role with the team.

While Lawson might not be the most household name, or the most popular hire, Scalabrine thinks she has what it takes to bring the Celtics back to prominence.

“I think they are going to hire Kara Lawson,” he said via NBC Boston. “I know the organization thinks she is unbelievable. I know the players respect her, which she went down to Duke to coach the women’s team there. I am just putting A + B = C here. To me, I think they hire Kara Lawson.”

Is Kara Lawson The Answer For The Celtics?

Scalabrine would elaborate on what Kara Lawson brings to the table.

“She’s insanely good as a coach,” Scalabrine continued via Bro Bible. “It’s not one of those things where, ‘Well, she’s good for a female.’ No, no, no. She walked into practice and she commanded practice right from the jump. She was giving people tips and people’s jaws were dropping. She’s elite at what she does. The issue with her going to Duke and she didn’t get the chance to coach this year because of COVID.

“… To me Kara Lawson, I thought from the jump she has head coaching material within five minutes of talking with her. And that is just me meeting with her on my own. And then I started asking the other coaches about her and it was authentically like she is on a completely different level as a basketball coach. I am glad she went out there and took the Duke job because she was like, ‘I want to be a head coach. I want head-coaching experience.’

“I don’t even want to go down the road of saying this would be a historic hire. I think she might be the most qualified for the job. When you think about these players and who they already know and you’re bringing in someone the players respect and Brad respects, to me it makes the most sense.”

While it has been a long time coming for a women to lead a mens team, Kara Lawson breaking barriers would be exciting for so many different reasons.

Does Brad Stevens have the guts to make Kara Lawson the next head coach of the Boston Celtics?
