Bob Stoops’ name dominated sports talk today when Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley revealed that Stoops was helping coach for the time being.

“We brought Coach Stoops out of retirement today,” Riley said at his weekly news conference via ESPN. “He was out on the field and coached with us today. It was great to have him out there.”

After an uproar on social media from college football fans about Coach Stoops’ return, he posted this message on Twitter.

“When Lincoln asked me if I’d be willing to help him in a coaching role while he was a little short-handed I didn’t hesitate to say yes,” Stoops wrote in a statement. “Certainly I’m happy to do anything I can to assist the team for however long I’m asked to. But obviously with me being away from the day-to-day activities of the program for a while now, my input will be minimal,” Bob Stoops said.

Bob Stoops was Oklahoma’s head coach for 18 seasons, and remains a college football legend. He led Oklahoma to a national championship in 2000, along with 10 Big 12 championships. He gave the keys to Oklahoma Sooners football to Lincoln Riley prior to the 2017 season.

“Just how much he cares about this program, I don’t think there’s anything that he wouldn’t do,” Riley said. “So it was great to have him out there today. It was awesome. Our kids were excited to see him, all of us were excited to see him, so I think he had some fun as well.”

I guess you can’t keep a football man away from the game for too long. I’m sure Stoops will be a great asset for Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma program.
