Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger knows this upcoming season might be his last chance to win in the NFL. But to do so, he’s going to need DPOY candidate TJ Watt to have his contract situation figured out.

Watt has been sitting out of practice while he continues to try to work through a massive new extension with the Steelers. And when speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Roethlisberger made it clear that the team needs to do whatever it takes to keep their dominant pass rusher happy.

“I think TJ should get what the heck he wants,” Roethlisberger said.  “He’s argubly the best football player in the game right now, not just on defense, but in general.”

Ben Roethlisberger isn’t the only member of the Steelers who knows that they have to get the TJ Watt situation sorted out before the regular season begins this weekend.

When speaking on the matter, coach Mike Tomlin said he remains confident that they’ll be able to get something done.

“I remain optimistic that something is going to get done from a deal perspective,” Tomlin said Tuesday. “That aside, you know, I’m expecting him to work tomorrow. I’m proceeding with the assumption that he’s going to work tomorrow. You know, that’s kind of the approach that I’m taking.”

TJ Watt is set to enter the final year of his rookie contract before he’ll likely be made the highest paid defensive player of all-time.

Ben Roethlisberger, on the other hand, is expected to be retiring at the end of the season.
