Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms doesn’t sound too pleased with the NBA’s plans to hold the All-Star game in her city.
The NBA recently announced last-minute plans to host the 2021 All-Star Game in Atlanta despite COVID concerns. The game is scheduled for Sunday, March 7. Keisha Lance Bottoms knows that the All-Star game normally draws a crowd, and she’s urging fans not to go overboard on All-Star weekend, due to the pandemic.
“Under normal circumstances, we would be extremely grateful for the opportunity to host the NBA All-Star game, but this is not a typical year,” Lance Bottoms said about the game. “I have shared my concerns related to public health and safety with the NBA and Atlanta Hawks. We are in agreement that this is a med-for-TV event only, and people should not travel to Atlanta to party. There will be no NBA sanctioned events open to the public and we strongly encourage promoters, clubs, bars, etc. not to host events in the city related to this game.”

In my opinion, this whole thing is an unnecessary headache. Sure, the NBA will make money from TV ratings for holding the game…but at what cost? You know Atlanta residents are going to get weirdly excited about the game being in their town, and I’m sure some COVID-related problems will ensue.
I’m with Keisha Lance Bottoms here, just forego the All-Star Game for one year. It’s not the end of the world.
