Andy Dalton should be thanking his lucky stars that he got swooped up by the Chicago Bears this offseason.
Trevor Lawrence will start in Jacksonville, Zach Wilson in New York, Trey Lance will play in San Francisco, and now, the Patriots will be starting Mac Jones over Cam Newton.
But despite Justin Fields’ electric preseason, Bears coach Matt Nagy has maintained that he’ll be starting Andy Dalton.

After the Cam Newton news was being revealed, fans swarmed social media to project their disbelief that the Bears are still going with Andy Dalton.
The Patriots cut Cam Newton. And yet the Bears are really going to start Andy Dalton Week 1.

Matt Nagy: "I made Andy Dalton a promise." #Bears

It’s okay for a team to admit their rookie QB is better than their veteran. The Patriots weren’t afraid and cut Cam Newton. The #Bears are still starting Andy Dalton.
Generally, if you’re doing something the exact opposite of Bill Belichick, you’re probably doing it wrong.

The Patriots just cut Cam Newton for Mac Jones.
The Bears are starting Andy Dalton over Justin Fields.
I’m not going to say who is making the right decision, but one of these teams has won 3 Super Bowls in the last 10 years, and it isn’t the Bears.

Bears: Announce Andy Dalton as the starter. Likely eyerolls and heavy sighs in the locker room. Standard old school cliche's about rookies needing time to learn and develop…they don't.
Patriots: Cut Cam Newton because Mac is ready.

The Andy Dalton situation isn’t exactly the same thing as what went down with Cam Newton in New England.
Newton was unvaccinated, and had to sit out a good portion of last week due to a COVID protocol issue. Thus, giving Mac Jones a leg up in their competition.
But that’s almost besides the point. We saw Andy Dalton under center for the Cowboys all last season, and know he’s not the guy to take the Bears over the edge in 2021.
If Justin Fields looks ready for NFL football, why not give the kid a shot?
