It’s official. After weeks of speculation the Chicago White Sox have hired 76-year-old Tony La Russa to be their next manager. La Russa is now the oldest acting head coach in all of American major sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL). This hiring brought out all the jokes on social media.

Some of these had me dying. Don’t expect the old jokes to die down anytime soon, either. La Russa will always be the old guy during his tenure in Chicago. You know what he can do to shut everyone up, win. I think La Russa will be able to do that with the Chicago White Sox.

All kidding aside, I think it’s a fine hire. I wrote about the likelihood of La Russa ending up with the White Sox yesterday, and I stand by what I said. This guy may be old, but he’s a winner. He has also been working in MLB front offices for the past nine years. He’ll be able to mix an old-school baseball mind with new-school analytics.

It may not be the most popular hire, but I actually think Tony La Russa will do a fine job in Chicago.
