Dwayne Haskins’ short tenure with the Washington Football Team didn’t exactly go as planned. Fortunately, Haskins has been given a second chance to showcase his talents in the NFL. On Thursday afternoon, Haskins signed a deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Sometimes a change of scenery is all it takes for a quarterback to revitalize their career. That may or may not be the case for Dwayne Haskins. However, WFT quarterback Alex Smith has some words of wisdom for Haskins ahead of his new contract.

Alex Smith highlighted the importance of eliminating distractions for young quarterbacks like Dwayne Haskins.

“The first thing I hope with Dwayne – and I’ve told him this – is you don’t have a chance until you’ve eliminated a lot of the distractions going on in your life,” Smith said, via NBC Washington. “It’s hard as a young player, as a young draft pick, certainly as a quarterback thrust with a lot of weight and expectations.”

“You have to be able to eliminate all that other stuff, because none of that matters if you can’t go out there and play at a high level. You’ll never be able to develop into the player, into your potential if you don’t eliminate all that stuff as well. So my hope for Dwayne is to do that.”

Alex Smith is no stranger to overcoming adversity, so Dwayne Haskins would be wise to take his advice. It just might be the confidence boost he needs to turn the corner in his young NFL career. Haskins is only 23, so he has time to make a splash in the NFL as a legitimate starter. But first, he will have to prove that he has opted to let go of the past and has made the decision to learn from his mistakes.
