Count Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid among the many soccer fans who have seen enough of VAR.

During the Arsenal-Manchester United game at Old Trafford on Saturday morning, it appeared as though Gabriel Martinelli gave Arsenal a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. But after a VAR check, it was deemed that Martin Odegaard illegally brought down Man U’s Christian Eriksen to receive possession of the ball before the goal was scored.

While many Arsenal fans were sharing their displeasure, Joel Embiid took to social media to share his take that VAR should be abolished.

“VAR is the worst thing to have happened to football,” Embiid said on Twitter. He continued: “Let the refs make calls and live with the results.”

Manchester United would go on to beat Arsenal thanks to two goals from Marcus Rashford, along with a tally from newcomer Antony Santos. But after the game, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta spoke out on the critical VAR decision that didn’t go his way.

“The referee said it was a really soft decision. We just ask for consistency. Today we disallowed the goal again, there is nothing we can do unfortunately now,” he said in his post-match press conference.

After a strong start to the season, Arsenal currently sits at the top of the Premier League standings, with the Manchester Untied loss serving as their first defeat of the season.

They’ll have the opportunity to get back on track when they take on FC Zurich in the Europa League on Thursday. Their next Premier League match will be against Everton on Sunday morning.
