Report: One Team Waiting To Scoop Up Baker Mayfield

Would the Pittsburgh Steelers really scoop up Baker Mayfield from their bitter rivals?

When the Browns made the blockbuster deal for Deshaun Watson, many believed that a Mayfield trade was imminent. But as time has gone on, it has become clear that no team really wants to give up anything to take a flier on Baker.

However, the market would open up if the Browns were to just give the former first pick in the draft his outright release. And according to ESPN’s Jeff Darlington, the Steelers would immediately pounce if Baker Mayfield becomes a free agent.

“If for some reason the Browns, and I don’t expect this to happen, were to cut Baker Mayfield, I think he signs with the Pittsburgh Steelers the very next day,” Darlington said on “Get Up”.

This offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers seemingly filled the void left from Ben Roethlisberger retirement by signing Mitchell Trubisky. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re done trying to shore up their QB room.

Currently, the team has Mason Rudolph and Trubisky. But they’ve also been doing their due-diligence on draft prospects Malik Willis and Kenny Pickett.

If there’s little risk involved, the Steelers might just opt to create a quarterback competition between Baker Mayfield and Mitchell Trubisky for next season, while also continuing their attempt to draft their true QB of the future.

It would be awesome drama if Mayfield gets to go up against the Browns two times next season.
