Mike Tomlin Comments On Kenny Pickett’s Small Hand Size

According to a report, the Pittsburgh Steelers are eyeing three quarterbacks in free agency along with Malike Willis in the draft to replace Ben Roethlisberger

Mike Tomlin and the Steelers clearly didn’t put too much stake in newly-drafted quarterback Kenny Pickett’s hand size.

Prior to the NFL Draft, Pickett was trending after his hand was measured smaller than any starting quarterback currently in the NFL.

But after the Steelers took Kenny Pickett in the first round of the NFL Draft, Mike Tomlin admitted that this case was different.

“I potentially was capable of buying into that if I didn’t watch him play college football in Pittsburgh and deal with the elements that come with playing in this environment,” Tomlin said. “So you can buy into the hand size thing or you can just look at how he performed in a variety of conditions, and we have those conditions in Pittsburgh. So there was very little speculation from our perspective about how he might handle the ball in inclement weather, wet days, etc. They played North Carolina on a Thursday night, I went to the game, it was raining pretty good that night and he had no issues.”

Earlier in the week, Mike Tomlin said he expects a ‘fierce’ quarterback competition between Kenny Pickett, Mitchell Trubisky and Mason Rudolph.

“I expect it to be fierce, because I know all three guys,” Tomlin said via CBS Sports. “I don’t expect anyone to take a back seat. The challenge is from a structure standpoint. Are we providing enough of a platform for all the guys to show what they’re capable of? That’s going to be the challenge component of it.

Considering the current quarterback dynamic for Mike Tomlin’s Steelers, I’d be surprised if Kenny Pickett doesn’t see the field at some point next season.
